Honestly, I liked it a lot outside the final level. If you treat it solely as one, you are going to suck and not have fun. Lost Planet has always been half action title, half shooter. After all, if a game is almost universally a love-or-hate thing, it's probably worth finding out whether you fall into the camp that thinks it's really something special. I don't know if it would hold up to a solo-only player now - I personally love it in singleplayer, but then I've also played it five or six times through in co-op - but as far as singleplayer goes, it's definitely a pretty different game than the one that reviews and most forum opinions are based on, so I'd recommend giving it a try for yourself, if you're interested. Really, a lot of the same structural mechanics that you see in games like Monster Hunter or Demon's Souls, but people don't seem to like them in a shooter. It also has a lot of the invincibility frames, stun frames, cancels, knockdowns, etc from the first game.

The game gave you a limited number of credits distributed among the team, and if you ran through them, you got a game over, lost all progress in that (often relatively lengthy, multi-stage) chapter, and had to restart - a later patch changed this, so you can restart at the most recent stage instead of repeating the entire chapter. It melds old-school/Japanese arcade mechanics with a third-person shooter, and a lot of people don't find the mix palatable. Even as a co-op game, several sections of the game are built for somewhat complex teamwork (at least compared with, say, Left 4 Dead), and so it was inordinately difficult on people who weren't making an effort to build communication. A patch released later brought Easy and Normal difficulties in line with LP1 when playing solo, but at the time when the game was released (and more importantly, when it was reviewed), the game was inordinately difficult to play alone, unless you'd already played through in co-op and knew the game inside and out. If you remember the complaints about Resident Evil 5 from people who refuse to play co-op, magnify those by about 5x. It was very much built around co-op, and was even moreso at the time it was released. To explain exactly why that is would kind of be a thing, so the short of it is: There are a lot of people who think it's a piece of crap (in the Internet-opinion sense ie: thoroughly mediocre), and a number of people who think it's one of the best games released this year, without a whole lot of in-between.
